Necrotizing enterocolitis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in newborns, especially those born preterm. The pathogenesis of NEC has intrigued the neonatal medical and surgical community for over 60 years. Significant strides have been made in recent years in our understanding of why NEC occurs.
